Behaviour Code
At Investigator College we aim to:
- Maintain a happy and productive learning environment where children have the right to learn and teachers have the right to teach
- Develop consistency in behaviour management from Reception to Year 12
- Develop responsibility and good citizenship in students
- Encourage students to achieve their potential through a range of learning experiences
- Build a strong partnership between parents / caregivers, staff and students
- Develop tolerance
- Empower students through teaching skills in problem solving and conflict resolutions
CODE OF RESPONSIBLE BEHAVIOUR

Positive Strategies to encourage responsible behaviour
- Encourage students to realize the intrinsic rewards in appropriate behaviour
- Verbal encouragement
- Positive comments on students’ work
- Promote student participation in class and school decision making
- Encourage students with the special interests and academic strengths through national Competitions, Choir, computing, divers sports etc
Consequences for irresponsible behaviour in class
- Low level responses (non-verbal messages, feedback, “I” statements, defusing potential incidents, giving choices etc)
- Rule reminders
- ‘Time out’ in class and/or buddy class
- Detention (for middle and senior School students only)
- ‘Time out’ in office
- Take home
- Suspension
- Parents/Caregivers will be kept informed throughout this process
Responsibilities
Staff
- Negotiate and display class rules
- Reinforce positive behaviour
- Build on student/staff relationships
- Model appropriate and expected behaviours
- Provide consistency in practice and methodology
- Use self evaluation in all aspects of teaching
- Communicate with parents/caregivers
SENiOR STAFF
- Promote a supportive, success-orientated school ethos
- Ensure a consistent approach to behaviour management
- Communicate extensively with all levels of the College community
- Follow up on student behaviour matters
PARENTS / CAREGIVERS
- Encourage and support children with their learning
- Have and understanding of procedures related to student behaviour management. This may include:
- Take home if student does not respond appropriately
- Supporting the College’s consequences for irresponsible behaviour
- Attending behaviour meetings
STUDENTS
- Respect other people’s rights and their property
- Learn and play safely
- Treat others the way they would like to be treated
- Follow College rules
JUNIOR SCHOOL YARD CODE OF CONDUCT
Students are placed in a ‘yellow space’ when they
- Engage in rough/unsafe play
- Play in toilets
- Climb trees
- Interfere with the play of others
- Run in designated walking areas
- Are in classrooms without supervision
- Tease (silly, low level verbal harassment)
- Talk or interact with other students when place in a ‘yellow space’
- Litter or do not eat in the correct places
- Engage in water play
- Are out of bounds
- Do not have a hat
Students are placed in a ‘sit-out’ (in the office of the Head of School from 1- 1.20pm during lunch time) if they are engaged in any of the following behaviours
- Harmful or dangerous play
- Violence
- Abuse or insolence towards others, including not following a reasonable request by staff
- Bullying of wilful harassment
- Deliberate distruction or misue of properly
- Throwing objects with intent to harm
- Leaving the school grounds without permission
Consequences
- Rule reminder/s
- Yellow space
- ‘Purple space’ / sit-out
- Restricted play
- Yard exit
- Suspension from yard
Middle and Senior School Yard Code of conduct
Minor Infringements
The following infringements are considered minor undesirable behaviour in the yard and students are given a consequence if they
- Engage in unsafe / inappropriate behaviour
- Interfere with the activities of others
- Are in classrooms without permission
- Low level verbal harassment
- Litter or do not eat in the correct places
- Are out of bounds
- Do not have a hat
Consequences may include reminders, yard clean up, detention or restricted areas.
Major Infringements
The following infringements are consider major undesirable behaviours in the yard.
Students are sent to the office if they engage in any of the of the following behaviours:
- Harmful or dangerous behaviour
- Violence
- Abuse or insolence towards others, including not following a reasonable request by a staff member
- Bullying or wilful harassment
- Deliberate destruction or misuse of property
- Leaving the College grounds without permission
Grievance Procedures
At Investigator College we support the right to any member of the school community who believes our School Behaviour Code is not being supported or enforced, to have their grievances addressed.Students may
- Arrange an appropriate time to speak with the teacher
- Inform the teacher that they will be speaking to someone else if the problem is not resolved
- Arrange a time to speak to the Head of School or Principal
Parents / Caregivers may
- Arrange an appropriate time to speak to the teacher
- Inform the teacher of the issue
- Allow reasonable time for the issue to be addressed
- Inform the teacher that they will be speaking to someone if the problem is not resolved
- Arrange a time to speak to the Head of School or Principal
Staff may
- Arrange a time to speak to the person concerned
- Allow reasonable time for the issue to be addressed
- Speak to their Head of School and ask for support in addressing the grievance if the issue is not resolved
- Speak to someone else on the Leadership team if they are still dissatisfied
