During this term we have all recognised a myriad of emotions. Although daunting at times, the continuous joy, excitement and thirst for learning displayed by our Little Investigators has encouraged us to continue to make a positive difference, and to offer support to our families, our community and above all, our students.
Research shows that having a sense of belonging can support students through a particularly vulnerable time when they are forming their identity and developing their psychosocial skills. Therefore, our focus this term has been on ‘Community – Transforming our Perspectives’.
ELC educators deliver ‘Home Learning’ Packs
We commenced this term by delivering to each of our families a special package, their ‘Home Learning’ pack. Our Little Investigators were able to stay connected to us during this time via the application Seesaw, enabling them to share their creations, explorations, investigations and to further develop their Mathematical and Literacy skills.
As you can see from the photographs and comments we received from our families, the learning packs were well received and there were lots of smiling faces!

Little Investigators emerge as Authors and Illustrators!
This term we have been focusing on resilience, the ability to cope with unexpected changes and to bounce back from adversity. The children were introduced to a new friend in our community, Ricky Resilience (puppet). Ricky has enabled the children to reflect and focus on situations in their everyday lives, answering questions such as: What challenges have I experienced? What strategies did I use to cope with the difficult situation or challenge? Was it successful and what could I do differently next time?
As a provocation, the children enjoyed singing and dancing to the song “Don’t give up!” by Sesame Street and Bruno Mars. After listening to the music, the children were inspired to reminisce and share their own life experiences. The children emerged as Authors and Illustrators and published their very own Little Investigator book about Resilience with the aim to help others in their community.
Welcoming friends, old and new, to our community!
This term, with the support and guidance of our educators, our Little Investigators took part in a project to create a short video informing friends and visitors to our College about their Early Learners Centre. Our children researched how and why we welcome visitors and friends, and they discussed what is special about our community and how they might help others to feel a sense of belonging. This powerful film incorporates their voice, discussing what matters to them and inviting others to come see for themselves and join our community.
Working in Partnership
Phonological Awareness is a crucial, listening based skill set, essential for developing reading and writing skills. It requires a child to be able to hear the sounds in words and these are skills that need to be taught explicitly.
A special member of our community is our Speech Pathologist, Chloe Cocks, from ROAR Speech. During the term, we continued to welcome Chloe to screen all our children in Literacy. This screening ensures we have a clear understanding of each child’s stage of development and enables us to continue to work in partnership with Chloe and our families to ensure a strong Literacy foundation.
As a part of our Literacy component, children have been introduced to the Phonological Skills: Beginning Sound Awareness, Syllables and Rhyme. These have been introduced in a fun and engaging way by sharing group games, stories, songs and scavenger hunts with the children. We will continue to integrate these Literacy learning opportunities into our program in Term 3.
SALA Art Projects
The South Australian Living Artist (SALA) Festival is an open event that promotes the diversity of Visual Art across South Australia. Our Little Investigators have had an opportunity to take part in two SALA art projects this year.
Our first collaborative piece to enter into the SALA Festival this year is ‘There is no fingerprint too small that doesn’t leave a lasting imprint at Little Investigators’.
This term the children have been learning about 2D shapes; “The shapes are everywhere even in the ELC,” said Ezra. Some of the children went on a discovery shape walk around the school, while others chose to do observational shape drawings. The children have noticed that our ELC building has many interesting shapes and have proceeded to draw our centre.
These drawings were the inspiration for our collaborative art piece. The children had the opportunity to do finger print art. Individually, they have created, mixed and named their own colour, using their previous colour mixing knowledge. They will then place their finger print into a silhouette of our Early Learners Centre building. All fingerprints are a representation of the Little Investigators symbolising that, although we are all unique, when we come together we are united and we can celebrate all of our differences within our Little Investigators community. There is no fingerprint too small that doesn’t leave a lasting impression at our Early Learners Centre.
We were kindly invited by one of our families and the ACH (Aged Care Homes) Group to work in collaboration to create our second masterpiece. This year the ACH Group aims to bring the community together in the form of an art installation which is to be made up of 1000 paper butterflies created by the people of the community. “Butterflies represent many things to different people. To us they represent hope, life, joy, kindness and creativity. We hope that this exhibition can spark those emotions within our community and audience.” (ACH Group, 2020).
Our Little Investigators have created their own butterflies to contribute to the installation. They used black line markers to draw something that is special to them and then selected vibrant, water colour ink to create their butterfly. Their beautiful butterflies were further enhanced by their individual words of kindness. All of the butterflies represent each of the students in the Early Learners Centre – unique, vibrant and flourishing!
ACH Group will showcase the original butterflies in their online SALA exhibition and install them together en masse to spark joy and bring hope back into the community. We are excited to view the finished masterpiece.
Mid-Year Reception Graduates
We completed the term, by wishing some of our Little Investigators all the very best as they continue their learning journey and transition into Reception next term. As a College, we value the relationships we have with our families and feel it is important that they feel supported during this significant time in their child’s life.
We have enjoyed watching them grow, develop and flourish into the competent, capable and happy children they are today. At Little Investigators, we feel it is important that we provide our students with every opportunity in order for them to feel safe, supported and confident during the lead up to starting school. To aspire to be ‘their best self’.
We would like to congratulate our ELC graduates, Zoe Langdon, Grace Seagren and Sebastian McIntyre. We are extremely proud of their growth and development at Little Investigators. Congratulations and well done. We look forward to watching their learning journey develop in Reception.
