We blitzed them in the pool

After conducting swimming trials and looking at times provided, we settled on the swimming team that would represent our school at the SAPSASA District Swimming Carnival on Thursday 27th February.

Teams from every primary school in the district converged on the Strathalbyn pool for a day of friendly competition.

We sent a team of 26 students from Year 4 to 6 to compete. Our team was large compared to other schools, which was indicative of the depth of talent we were able to select from.

Investigator College was able to come out on top for the third year in succession. We won both the Overall Champion School as well as the Handicap shield – whereby the schools total score is divided by the number of students in Year 3-6.

Sebastian Warhurst won five events and set new records in each of them, in the 12-year-old butterfly, backstroke, freestyle, breaststroke and 100m freestyle.

Animal adaptations

On Wednesday in Weeks 2, 3 and 4 this term the Year 5s travelled out to the Currency Creek EcoCentre. This year the focus was on animal adaptations as part of their Biological Sciences Curriculum.

In Week 2 students set fauna cameras to try and capture images of animals. We spent time in the field looking for evidence of animals living at the site and identifying tracks and scats. Students chose four different locations and captured images of a variety of animals.

In Week 3, due to the extreme heat, we stayed at the Victor Harbor campus where students participated in sessions focused on the unique adaptations of bats. Thank you to guest speaker Chris Grant who shared his knowledge.

On the final visit in Week 4 students spent the day learning about the adaptations of reptiles. We studied local turtle species and fyke nets were set in the river to try and catch some local species. Students got in the water with waders to check the nets. This year we caught one eastern long-necked turtle as well as a variety of native and introduced fish, shrimp and yabbies. Students were also involved in a session on snake safety, including a snake bite first aid session. Thank you to Sylvia Zukowski from AquaSave for running the turtle sessions.

ELC Excursion

See below an update from ELC Director Michelle Brougham on the Little Investigators’ recent outing:

The highlight last week for ELC students was their first bush kindy walk to Bush for Life Reserve at Encounter Bay. The students were full of energy and enthusiasm about what was to come. Walking through the quad we were greeted by many of siblings and friends in the big school, but before we knew it, we were ready to cross the road, looking both ways for traffic, listening for cars and then crossing as a group with our educators when it was safe to do so. We focused on walking on the path alongside the road to ensure that we were still safe. Once at the bush for life site we needed to wash our shoes to help protect the environment and preserve the work that the volunteers are doing here. As we walked through the bush Mr Freebairn pointed out cool and interesting things for our students to look at such as hollow trees, a beehive, sap on the branches, holes in the ground and flowers. We really needed to rely on our senses to gather information about what we could see, smell, hear and feel around us. These opportunities enable students to deepen their knowledge and understanding of the world around them, build confidence and capacity, and develop language skills. There are many benefits of our bush kindy adventures and we look forward to expanding on these over the course of 2025.

Junior School Update

The Junior School was a sea of colour recently when all children from Reception to Year 6 were involved in our annual athletics carnival. The Junior Primary students had the opportunity to challenge themselves in a series of activities that involved running, jumping and throwing.  The students from Years 3 – 6 took it up a notch as they represented their House in a series of events designed to encourage participation by all, as well as the opportunity for the athletically-able to excel.
