This period can often be a stressful time for our students, but I have been pleased to see many of them studying hard in lessons and higher-than-usual attendance at our Wednesday night study sessions. Developing good study habits and effective time management is crucial for academic success and personal development in schools, but also beyond school life. Some tips that I utilised in my university days and tips I freely share with students include:
Create a study schedule
- Designate regular time slots for studying each day.
- Stick to a routine to build consistency.
Find a productive study environment
- Choose a quiet, well-lit space with minimal distractions.
- Use noise-cancelling headphones or soft background music if needed. * Please be mindful of mobile phones as distractions. Turn off notifications and listen to quite music only.
Use active learning techniques
- Summarise information in your own words.
- Use flashcards, diagrams, or teaching the material to someone else.
- Practice retrieval with quizzes or self-testing.
Take regular breaks (Pomodoro Technique)
- Study for 25 minutes, then take a five-minute break.
- Spend shorts blocks of time on multiple subjects, rather than one extended session for one subject only.
Stay organised
- Keep notes, assignments, and materials neatly filed.
- Use folders (physical or digital) and a planner or app.
Review regularly
- Don’t cram. Review material weekly to reinforce learning.
Ask for help
- Don’t hesitate to approach teachers to ask for help. We are here to support you in your learning goals. Wednesday night study sessions are open to all senior students. Within that time, you can organise to meet up with your teachers for some one on one or group work time. Wednesday sessions run from 3:30-5:00pm every Wednesday night in room 204. Mrs Bonser and I are there to supervise and assist.
Our Year 12 students have already reached the halfway point of their final year at school. They have found that time has gone quickly and hopefully they will take many of these habits onboard as they head into the second half of their year. With that in mind, on Thursday night of Week 1 of Term 3 (4-7pm) we will be hosting Year 12 student/teacher interviews. This session is inclusive to students studying a Stage 2 subject and also includes an information session about SATAC and ATAR scores. Information will be sent home shortly and we encourage all Year 12s and their families to attend.
Good luck to our Year 10s who be off on work experience for all of Week 9. For many of them, this may be the first step into life after school.
We also wish our Musical students and staff the best of luck for their performance starting on Friday 27 June. These are always brilliant shows, that sell out fast, so be sure to get your tickets ASAP.
Thank you all again for your ongoing support of the College. We wish you all a lovely three-week break and hope you can avoid the winter bugs.
