From Our Head of Junior School

Junior School Update

Thursday, 20 March 2025
The Junior School was a sea of colour recently when all children from Reception to Year 6 were involved in our annual athletics carnival. The Junior Primary students had the opportunity to challenge themselves in a series of activities that involved running, jumping and throwing.  The students from Years 3 – 6 took it up a notch as they represented their House in a series of events designed to encourage participation by all, as well as the opportunity for the athletically-able to excel.

The weather was quite warm, so the support of our Parents and Friends Association in helping with catering was greatly appreciated.  It was wonderful to see so many parents, grandparents and even younger siblings in attendance on the day. A highlight for me is when even students who do not find athletics easy still give their all for the benefit of their House.

The students who did very well in our competition will now go on to represent the college at the district level, competing against other primary schools.

After all events were run and won, the final results had Banksia House take home the Penelope Scott Memorial Shield for Athletics. There was only 70 points separating first and fourth place, so it was a very close competition.

We are in the process of reviewing our Sports Day so if there are any suggestions that you’d like us to consider, please fill out this feedback survey.

NAPLAN

We are today concluding the time of year that involves the National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy. NAPLAN is a literacy and numeracy assessment that students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 sit each year. It is the only national assessment all Australian students have the opportunity to undertake. Essentially, NAPLAN involves completing assessment tasks that provide a measure of where they sit on their learning journey.

NAPLAN is just one aspect of a school’s assessment and reporting process. It does not replace ongoing assessments made by teachers about student performance, but it can provide teachers with additional information about students’ educational progress.

It is a snapshot in time and the results certainly do not define the child completing the tests and while it provides useful data on progress, the fact that we often won’t receive that data until much later in the year the data needs to be considered alongside all of the other information that parents and teachers know about each and every student.

Voting is complete

Each of our classes from Year 1 to Year 6 have recently held elections to find a student from their midst that they feel would be well suited to represent their class on our Junior School Student Representative Council. This will be a collective voice of the students aimed at bringing ideas up to a wider forum.  It may include new initiatives, ways we can improve our school and also issues that they feel need addressing. Congratulations to the following students.

  • Year 1. Lottie Fischer & Jet Draper
  • Year 2. Will Robinson & Hamish Foote
  • Year 3. Spencer McGregor & Delphine Nairn
  • Year 4. Eddie Wilson & Maya Littlefield
  • Year 5. Samantha Roge & Tarli Stafford
  • Year 6. College Captains Seb Warhurst & Evie Toeroek
