Change, Flexibility and Resilience – Keys to School Life

Monday, 18 March 2024
Schools would have to be one of the most dynamic places to learn and work. On any given day, you could have different teachers, different subjects and in different classrooms or environments.

School staff and students are therefore able to adapt to change, be flexible, but at different rates. Big changes encourage us to develop resilience and try to tackle new dynamics. This all occurs and succeeds if we work as a team. At Investigator College, we are truly blessed with a brilliant team of staff and students.

In this year already, we have needed to accept some quick changes and adapt as best we can. We currently have two valued staff members out on extended sick leave and we wish them both good health in the very near future. We welcome new staff member Melanie Struben, who will be covering Trystan Perry’s classes for the remainder of this term. Melanie is a highly experienced and dedicated professional teacher and we are lucky to have her join our staff.

In Tom Hancock’s absence, we have re-shaped our Leadership structures a little to ensure the continuity of our Middle Years program. I have accepted the role of leading the Middle Years, Raji Kaur will operate as our Year 7 coordinator, and David Marks will operate as our Year 8 coordinator. We feel confident that this team, along with our dedicated Middle Years staff, will help steady the ship in the interim.

In my 16 years at Investigator I have had a few different roles, but the one I am able to draw on at this time is my role as Head of Middle School at our Goolwa Campus. I served that role for five years before a change of direction when I moved into the Head of HASS up until 2022. As I accepted the role of Head of Senior School in 2023, I was able to take all of the skills and tools I learnt in my previous roles and apply them to this very dynamic role. I am very confident that my Leadership roles at Investigator, built alongside my 25 years in Education, will help me to effectively navigate the changes we face at present.

By fostering flexibility, embracing change, and promoting resilience, schools can create dynamic environments that empower students to succeed academically, socially and emotionally, both now and in the future. These qualities are not only essential for navigating the complexities of today’s world but also for preparing students to become lifelong learners and responsible global citizens.

We are very excited for our upcoming Open Day and I hope I have the opportunity to meet some new faces as we showcase our beautiful College.
