The Importance of Building Community in Schools

Monday, 26 August 2024
In my 26 years in education, I have been very fortunate to work in regional areas. From my very first school in the Barossa Valley, to regional Victoria, while we were on a military posting and now here on the beautiful Fleurieu, where we chose to raise our young family.

It has now been 16 years since we returned to South Australia. In all of these areas I have always enjoyed the sense of community. We live in such a beautiful landscape, but are also surrounded by so many opportunities to engage in our community. Sport, music, RSL clubs, SALA, Rotary, Lions are just a few of our community offerings.

One of Investigator College’s five values, is Community. Throughout the entire school year we are blessed with so many opportunities to connect with each other both in and out of school. In Week 5, we held our annual Book Week parade, but this year we made it an ELC -Year 12 event and it was such a delight to be a part of. This came about from the Secondary students requesting to be involved and staff endorsing their participation. It was such a fun event and I hope you have had the opportunity to view some of the photos. Parading with our Year 12s who told us how special they felt, was a highlight of the year for many of us and we are thankful to the Junior School for embracing us. The Year 6 students did a marvelous job of hosting this event.

Why is community so important in schools?

  • It can foster a sense of belonging – helping students to feel connected and supported.
  • It can enhance learning outcomes – teachers and students can share knowledge, skills, and resources more effectively within a strong community.
  • It can help to build positive relationships – students and staff can develop friendships and social networks that support both their academic and personal growth.
We are so blessed to be joined by regular community members who give freely to our school to help our students thrive.
  • It can promote positive behaviours – a strong community promotes shared values and norms, which can lead to better behavior and a more respectful environment.
  • It can provide role models – positive relationships within the community provide students with role models and mentors.

In the coming weeks we have a number of very important community events. Here are just a few to keep an eye out for:
RYDA – Rotary Youth Driver Awareness for our Year 10 students, Grandparents Day, Spring Showcase, Parent Teacher interviews, Musical cast viewing, Sammy D Foundation presentation and RU OK day are just a few events that will involve such a broad scope of our community. We know our students will benefit from these experiences and we are grateful from the ongoing support we receive in our community.

We hope to see many of you in these upcoming events!

Self-discipline and goal-setting for high school students

Self-discipline and goal-setting are critical for high school students as they navigate academic responsibilities, personal development, and future aspirations. In my 25+ years’ experience in education I have witnessed many students succeed with these invaluable skills, where others struggle without a strong sense of self-discipline and defined goals to work towards.

Devoted role models

There is no relationship quite like the one between grandparents and grandchildren. Without the pressures of parenthood, but with the wisdom and experience that come with age, grandparents can be devoted role models and nurturers, enthusiastic playmates and patient providers of knowledge, values and reassurance.
