LEARNING

Robotics

As a cornerstone of our STEM offering, robotics gives students a genuine head start on the technical skills that will shape their future, while building the human-centred qualities that underpin real innovation — creativity, teamwork and resilience.

LEARNING

Robotics at school

Investigator College supports robotics at every stage — starting in the primary classroom and building through to senior study, a dedicated club, and a purpose-built learning space.

Robotics begins in the classroom, through our Digital Technologies subject, which commences in Year 3 and gives every student a grounding in coding, design thinking and problem-solving. From 2027, the learning journey can continue through the entirety of school, with our new Stage 2 subject, Design, Technology and Engineering (Robotic & Electronic Systems) giving those with a genuine passion the chance to study robotics in depth.

Students with an interest can participate in our lunchtime Robotics Club, where first-time roboticists and experienced competitors work side by side.

Explicit instruction is complemented by peer-led learning, so students build technical skill over time, at their own pace. Participation has grown to around 40 students, with strong uptake among both male and female students.

Our dedicated Robotics Studio in the Aurora Building (opened 2026) gives robotics learning a proper home: a purpose-built space to design, build and test their robots, complete with a full-scale, competition-standard field. This allows students to learn and practice in competition-like conditions, and means the school can host other schools and serve as a regional robotics hub.

Learning

Robotics at competitions

Beyond the classroom, our students have enjoyed remarkable success in VEX Robotics competitions. VEX Robotics is an internationally recognised program in which teams design, build and program robots to solve open-ended, real-world challenges.

Investigator College elementary, middle and senior teams take part in multiple local, state and national competitions each year, providing an opportunity to develop their skills outside of the classroom.

Our flagship team, Invictus, is a strong example of what the program can achieve. They have frequently held the number one Australian ranking for their age group and held a top ten rank internationally on multiple occasions, topped only by teams in the USA and China.

A testament to their hard work and the opportunities at the school, Invictus competed in the VEX Robotics World Championship in St Louis, USA in 2026, after winning the VEX Robotics National Competition in Sydney in 2025.
